Investors should look to energy stocks as stubborn inflation weighs on the stock market amid growing anxiety over whether the Federal Reserve will cut interest rates at all this year, according to Wolfe Research. "This inability to adequately tame inflation of course coincides with the reacceleration of Oil and Energy stocks over the past few months," analysts Rob Ginsberg and Read Harvey told clients in a Monday note. The Wolfe analysts said investors should take advantage of any near-term overbought consolidations and make a play for the stock to rise back into the mid $40s. Crude oil and the 10-year breakeven inflation rate, meanwhile, are both on the upswing from multiyear bases, according to the Wolfe analysts. "Needless to say, we want to keep playing Oil and Energy stocks to the upside over near – mid term, which should in turn put continued upward pressure on inflation," the Wolfe analysts said.

These are some of the forecasts for 2024 from Goldman Sachs chief US equity strategist David Kostin and his team. But that doesn't mean it's time to expect a full-on bull market or rapid economic growth anytime soon. So, to leave room for alternative outcomes, Kostin envisioned an even more optimistic scenario that would see rate cuts and stronger economic growth. The second strategy is to not shy away from growth stocks, but rather, be discerning. Yet, their forecasted sales growth is below their 2023 numbers.

REUTERS/Dado Ruvic/Illustration Acquire Licensing RightsOct 17 (Reuters) - U.S. natural gas producer Chesapeake Energy Corp (CHK.O) has approached Southwestern Energy (SWN.N), a peer valued by the stock market at $12 billion including debt, about a potential acquisition, people familiar with the matter said. Since then, Chesapeake has been shedding oil-producing assets to focus on its competence in natural gas. U.S. natural gas prices have been sluggish in recent months, as oversupply and warmer weather erode producers' profitability. Some analysts expect prices to go up in the next few months, as a pick-up in U.S. natural gas exports creates more domestic scarcity.

REUTERS/Andrew Kelly/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsAug 16 (Reuters) - EQT Corp (EQT.N), the biggest U.S. natural gas producer, said on Wednesday that it had won antitrust approval to close a deal to buy Quantum Energy-backed THQ Appalachia I LLC and associated infrastructure. The U.S. Federal Trade Commission said on Wednesday it had moved to resolve antitrust concerns over the transaction by hammering out a consent order that "prevents entanglements" between Quantum Energy Partners and EQT Corp. The agreement would bar Quantum from having a seat on EQT's board, requires Quantum to divest EQT shares and puts other restrictions on the deal to ensure competition in the energy market. Occidental said its CEO pay ratio follows the rules laid out by the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). IT'S RELATIVE WHEN IT COMES TO RETURNSTo be sure, the value of stock-based pay shrinks when markets sour. But most energy CEOs also have a measure of built-in protection from steep declines. That’s because about 90% of energy companies measure stock performance against others in the same industry who tend to suffer at similar times. Many energy companies are under pressure from investors to reform CEO pay, according to disclosures in their annual proxy statements.

April 26 (Reuters) - Pioneer Natural Resources Co (PXD.N) on Wednesday said its chief executive officer, Scott Sheffield, will retire by the end of 2023, sending the U.S. shale producer's shares down 2% in extended trading. Sheffield, an energy veteran, served as Pioneer’s founding CEO from 1997 to 2016 and chairman since 1999. Its net income also fell 39% to $1.2 billion from $2 billion last year as oil prices cooled. The oil and gas producer anticipates second-quarter oil production between 357,000 and 372,000 barrels per day and total oil and gas production of between 647,000 and 702,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day. Natural gas producer EQT Corp (EQT.N) also beat profit estimates for the first quarter on higher sales volumes.
Barclays cut its price target on Club holding Constellation Brands (STZ) to $277 per share, from $279, while maintaining an overweight rating. The bank maintained a price target of $390 per share, along with an overweight rating. Citi reiterated neutral ratings on chipmakers Intel (INTC) and Club holding Advanced Micro Devices (AMD), a result of ongoing weak cloud demand. The secretive dinner has been held almost annually at the CERAWeek energy conference. This year's event will be the first with Haitham Al Ghais as secretary general for the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries. OPEC had viewed shale as an untamed force that undercut its revenue by bringing vast new oil supplies to market. Fewer OPEC officials are present at this year's annual CERAWeek conferencing, with ministers from key countries including Saudi Arabia and Iraq absent from the attendee list. U.S. natural gas futures plunged by about 15% on Monday - its biggest one-day drop in over eight months —on forecasts for much less cold weather and heating demand than previously expected over the next two weeks. "This has translated to ... [gas] demand lost over the forecast period ... With the vast majority of that being [residential and commercial] demand," Gelber said. The gas market is used to huge price swings, which are usually related to changes in weather forecasts. When operating at full power, Freeport LNG, the second-biggest U.S. LNG export plant, can turn about 2.1 bcfd of gas into LNG for export. That compares with a monthly record of 12.9 bcfd in March 2022, before the Freeport LNG facility shut.

HOUSTON, Feb 14 (Reuters) - A rout in natural gas prices will hurt first-quarter earnings and cash flows at gas producers as hedges - the industry's version of price insurance - were inadequate to offset the expected losses, analysts and industry experts said. About 36% of 2023 gas production was hedged at the end of September, according to consultancy Energy Aspects, which tracked 40 publicly traded gas producers. EQT Corp (EQT.N), the top U.S. producer of natural gas, last month said it expects a $4.6 billion loss on derivatives for 2022, and net cash settlements of $5.9 billion. These transactions have a producer buy an agreement to sell natural gas at one price, called a put, while also selling a put at a lower price in hopes of pocketing the premium from its buyer. Were gas prices to average $2.36 per mmcf, the company would pay out 14 cents per mmcf, reducing the gains from the hedge.
The oil and gas sector provided investors stellar returns in 2022 when the rest of the market failed to perform. The S & P Oil & Gas Exploration & Production Index was up 45% last year. Analysts and fund managers say several key factors may push up oil prices in the near future. Earthstone Energy Shares of Earthstone , a Texas-headquartered independent oil and gas company, are expected to go up by 85.8% by analysts over the next year. Meanwhile, the benchmark S & P Oil & Gas Exploration & Production Index has risen by 3% over the same period.

Goldman Sachs has a basket of stocks with a long track record of beating the market and so far, this year is no exception. While the S & P 500 is on track to finish the year down almost 20%, Goldman's High Sharpe Ratio basket outperformed that. Implied volatility of the median stock in the basket is only slightly higher than that of the median S & P stock (36% vs. 31%). "Our High Sharpe Ratio basket is constructed based on the relative ranking of stocks within each sector." Goldman also added Southwest Airlines and energy stock EQT Corp , both of which have a Sharpe ratio above 1.0.

It was weighed by U.S. natural gas futures slumping more than 8% on Monday, as the outlook dimmed due to forecasts for milder weather and the delayed restart of the Freeport liquefied natural gas (LNG) export plant.
